MegaPhone 2002v2 (Version 9.0.0.26) Welcome to MegaPhone! We founded The MegaPhone Company because we are MegaPhone enthusiasts who were very disappointed when the company that originally developed it went out of business. We acquired the rights to develop new versions of MegaPhone to support new computers and new operating systems. MegaPhone 2002v2 is supported on the following operating system versions: - Windows 98se - Windows Me - Windows 2000 - Windows XP (Service Pack 1 Required) It also runs on the following operating systems versions: - Windows 95b - Windows 98 However we cannot provide technical support for these older systems and so we recommend upgrading to Windows 98se or newer. MegaPhone 2002v2 includes all the features that MegaPhone users have come to love: - Address Book with MegaDial - Multi-Mailbox Voice Messaging - SpeakerPhone - Fax Send and Receive - Music on Hold - TouchTone Navigator New features in MegaPhone 2002v2 include: - Built-in system and modem compatibility testing - Automatic importing of address book data, mailboxes, and mailbox settings from older versions of MegaPhone - Support for selecting among multiple installed modems - Smaller installation files - "MegaPhone Extras". An optional installation that provides alternate Music on Hold and ring sound options. - Toll Saver. A feature that allows you to remotely check for pending messages without having to sign on. - Improved sound recording and playback. Sound conversion capability is now performed on the fly, addressing issues in the previous version that were reported by some users. The MegaPhone features that are active on your particular system configuration are determined by the capabilities of the modem installed in your computer. If your modem does not currently support voice functionality and speakerphone functionality, you may wish to upgrade to a new modem that does. (See our website for recommendations.) Note that DSL and Cable modems do not support MegaPhone's functionality but can be used simultaneously with your voice/speakerphone/fax modem. IMPORTANT: We've spent months testing MegaPhone to ensure that you have a trouble-free experience installing and using it. The most significant things our testing determined were: (a) Windows XP users must install Service Pack 1 and (b) there are a lot of flawed modem drivers in circulation. WINDOWS XP SP1: If you are using Windows XP you must install Microsoft's Service Pack 1 for Windows XP in order to use MegaPhone 2002v2. Service Pack 1 (SP1) is a free download from Microsoft's web site at www.microsoft.com. Failure to install SP1 will lead to a wide variety of problems. NEW MODEM DRIVERS and FIRMWARE: Most Windows installation disks and most computers include Modem drivers that are out of date. We have encountered at least one modem that has speakerphone hardware but its latest drivers do not support speakerphone functionality. If you encounter problems using MegaPhone the cause is likely that your modem driver is to blame (assuming that you've already installed SP1 if you're using Windows XP). You'll need to update BOTH your modem's FIRMWARE and install the latest DRIVERS and/or .INF file. If you've ever upgraded your computer's operating system you probably need new modem software. In our experience, MegaPhone will not take full advantage of your modem, and may not work as intended, unless you upgrade your modem software to be fully compatible with the version of Windows that you are running. Some useful websites for tracking down Modem drivers and firmware upgrades include: (Note that the MegaPhone Company is not affiliated with these websites in any way.) If, after upgrading to the latest modem drivers, you are unable to activate speakerphone functionality using your speakerphone modem, you should insist that the vendor replace your modem or provide a corrected modem driver. If you encounter this problem please let us know via a bug report, but please understand that there is nothing we can do to force your modem vendor to fix their driver. For recommendations on new modems, consult our website at www.megaphoneco.com. NEW for MegaPhone 2002v2 -- IMPORTING OLD ADDRESS BOOK AND MAILBOX DATA: If you have used an older version of MegaPhone you may wish to retain your old address book data, mailbox settings, received faxes, and received voice messages. If MegaPhone 2002v2 detects an older copy of MegaPhone it will offer to copy all of the old data during the installation process. If you give it permission, your old Address Book data will be imported into the new Address Book and your Mailboxes will be as they were. The MegaPhone 2002v2 installer will also preserve any faxes in your old mailboxes and your old fax viewing software. (Note that the new fax software uses standard TIFF files rather than the proprietary format used by the old fax software.) UNATTENDED ANSWERING: To take advantage of MegaPhone's messaging features you'll want to have it answer all of your calls. If you have another fax application installed (e.g. WinFax Pro or Microsoft Fax) you will need to disable it. If you don't, MegaPhone's behavior will vary depending upon the other software that you have. In some cases, MegaPhone will never answer, and in others whichever application is configured to answer on fewer rings will take your calls. Refer to the instructions that came with the other fax software if you're not sure how to disable it. WAKING FROM SLEEP: Many modems support waking your computer from sleep or standby mode to answer incoming calls, however you must configure this feature before it can be used. First, your computer must have Power Management features active then you must activate the feature for your modem. To do so: 1. Right click on "My Computer" and select "Properties" 2. Open the Device Manager Window (Windows 2000 and XP: Select "Hardware" Tab then click the "Device Manager..." button) 3. Select your modem 4. Open properties window for your modem 5. Select "Power Management" Tab (If there is no Power Management tab, your modem doesn't support this feature.) 6. Check the option for "Allow this device to wake/bring computer out of standby". 7. Click OK, close the Device Manager, and Reboot. TOUCHTONE NAVIGATOR: The TouchTone Navigator feature allows you to save touchtone "scripts" of touchtones to play after dialing a particular number stored in your address book. If you dial an unrecognized number and decline the option to add it to your address book, you won't be given the opportunity to save the touchtone "script" for that number because there is no address book entry for it. DIALING SPECIAL NUMBERS: If you need to dial certain digits, such as "9" for an outside line, or "*70" to block call waiting, you can configure this using the Windows "Dialing Rules" window which can be reached by pressing the "Location" button in MegaPhone's main window. This allows you to have different setting for different locations and then switch between locations as needed. You can override or supplement these settings on a call-by-call basis by pressing the "Dial Format" button that appears on the main window when you have typed in a phone number. If you want to store a special dialing sequence for a particular person, start their number with the letter "x" followed by the exact sequence of digits to dial (including digits needed to access an outside line). This tricks MegaPhone into thinking that it is dialing an internal number ("x" is for "extension") so it will ignore all the dialing rules applicable to normal calls. For more information on dialing use MegaPhone's Help menu. KNOWN ISSUES: The following are known issues in this release: - The "Manual Fax Send" menu command only works when you're on a speakerphone call using your speakerphone modem. Likewise, you must have a speakerphone modem to manually receive a fax after answering the call with MegaPhone. If you are expecting a fax call and you don't have a speakerphone modem, you can allow MegaPhone to answer the call automatically or choose "Receive Fax Now" while the call is ringing. - The dialing database may not be up to date for your dialing area. - "Time at Destination" feature only works if you enter a canonical phone number (e.g. +1(800)555-1212) - MegaPhone ignores Area Code Rules and Calling Cards that you create using the Windows "Dialing Rules" window. - On Windows NT, there are circumstances where you can't hang up while dialing an outbound call. This is a known issue within Microsoft's implementation of TAPI on Windows NT. We recommend upgrading to Windows 2000 or XP. - On Windows XP, the Call Status window appears behind the main window if you have a fax-only modem - On Windows XP, you can't place calls using the Speakerphone button followed by the digits to dial. You must enter the digits first and then place the call using the Dial button, or simply dial directly from an address book entry. This appears to be one of many limitations of Microsoft's implementation of Unimodem for Windows XP. - Occasionally, the progress bar doesn't increment properly during voice message playback REPORTING BUGS: If you encounter a problem with this release that isn't in the list of known issues above, and you've upgraded your modem's firmware and driver, please tell us about what you've found through our bug report form at: Thank-you for your support! ©2002,2003 The MegaPhone Company MegaPhone is a trademark of The MegaPhone Company Windows is a registered trademark of Microsoft Corporation Intel is a registered trademark of Intel Corporation
